THST charity fundraising cyclists break £20,000 barrier

6/6/2016

Our 'Cycle on you Spurs' team of riders completed the 145 mile run to Amsterdam this weekend having broken the £20,000 fundraising barrier. The 15 riders were recognised as having made the best team fundraising effort of all those competing in the event to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK.

The total raised by the team was £20,162, and money is still coming in. The team represented a wide range of Spurs fans, and included several riders who had personal experience of prostate cancer. Three riders from the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation also joined the team. It all came together after team leader and Trust board member Kevin Fitzgerald attended a Prostate Cancer UK-organised event with former Spurs manager Martin Jol.

The Trust had been looking for a flagship charity initiative, and this presented the ideal opportunity. And the months of fundraising brought together fans, the club and the local community – culminating in a fundraising barbecue held at the Antwerp Arms in Tottenham at the end of the season just gone. That incredibly enjoyable afternoon was boosted by club legend Ledley King and half-time touchline legend Paul Coyte putting on a 45-minute Q&A, and Ledley did us proud by staying to sign autographs and pose for photos throughout the afternoon. THFC also kindly donated raffle prizes, and helped promote and publicise the event.

Kevin Fitzgerald was also presented with a special orange jersey by former England captain Terry Butcher (below) in recognition of his efforts in organising the largest team with the greatest number of donors.

We'd like to thank the Antwerp Arms, all at Prostate Cancer UK, Martin Jol, Vision Sports Publishing, the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, everyone who helped with publicity, and of course THFC for all their help in making this such a successful initiative. And everyone who donated to this very deserving cause also gets a big thank you.

Most of all, a massive congratulations to our fantastic cyclists - Nick Affleck, Mike Brooks, Kieran Bryant, Omari Chambers-Alert, Niels Cleeren, Dave Clifford, Kevin Fitzgerald, Jennifer Gannon, Nickolaj Kennett, Hugh McDowall, John O’Brien, Sam O'Brien, Phil Penhey, Matt Pocock and Amy Warwick.
