Our December newsletter arrives with you early as we wind down, if only relatively, for Christmas. We’d like to take the opportunity to wish all our members and supporters a very happy festive season, all the very best over the holidays and the best of luck for the New Year. We’ve hugely appreciated the support you’ve given us throughout 2018.
There was certainly plenty of seasonal good cheer about on 16 December among those of us lucky enough to attend the new stadium South Stand familiarisation event. It’s no exaggeration to say what we saw surpassed our expectations. The stadium bowl itself is breathtaking, and we can’t wait for it to be packed with a crowd in full voice. And the quality and pricing of the food and drink in the South Stand was a very pleasant surprise.
It’s no secret that we have our differences with the Club over aspects of the new stadium, but we’ve always believed in giving credit where it is due, and credit really is due from what we saw. We haven’t heard a single negative comment, either in person on our social media feeds, and best of all the stadium really does feel like our home. We cannot wait to move in.
1. SPURS FANS’ NEW YEAR PARTY IN ASSOCIATION WITH THST AT BOXPARK WEMBLEY – SATURDAY 29 DECEMBER 2018
THST extends thanks to Boxpark Wembley, who are very generously hosting a New Year’s Party for Spurs fans, in association with THST, after the Wolverhampton Wanderers match on Saturday 29 December 2018.
Starting at 5pm, guests can enjoy a DJ set from Brandon Block along with appearances from Spurs legends and other surprises.
Tickets are free but please register via Eventbrite so we can regulate numbers. Book quickly to avoid disappointment! You will also need to show a valid match ticket on the door.
We look forward to raising a glass to 2018 and welcoming 2019 with as many Trust members and Spurs fans as possible on the night.
2. CROWD MANAGEMENT AT BARCELONA - 11 DECEMBER 2018
While our visit to the Nou Camp will bring back happy memories about what happened on the pitch, events off the pitch will not. We soon became aware of significant problems our fans had gaining entry to the ground, and spoke to fans during the course of the game who had been beaten by truncheon-wielding security guards.
We put out an appeal for fans to send reports in, and were in contact with our travelling stewards to get a clearer picture of what happened. Many fans sent in reports, pictures and videos and what emerges is a disturbing picture that we are determined those responsible will be brought to account for.
We were also told of late changes to the arrangements that had been communicated to fans, a long hold back and crushing after the final whistle, and that many fans were held so long they were left to walk several kilometres back into the city centre after the Metro shut at midnight.
We had flagged up concerns about entry to the ground in advance of the game, after speaking to fans of other English clubs who had visited, but what happened on the night was worse than we feared.
All the reports sent in have been compiled, anonymised where requested, and sent on to THFC, the new Unified Football Supporters Organisation, and Football Supporters Europe, the pan-European supporters body. The Metropolitan Police also requested a copy of the dossier and a version has been sent to them.
We have spoken to THFC, and the Club is in no doubt that what happened to our fans is not acceptable. It has told us it intends to pursue the issue with UEFA – European football’s governing body will not talk directly to fans – and will use the dossier we have compiled as part of its approach. We thank them for this.
We are also talking to Football Supporters Europe and supporter groups at other clubs whose fans have suffered similar treatment about submitting a joint complaint and publicising the disgraceful treatment away fans receive at the Nou Camp.
Complaints about the obscured views, dirty Perspex screens, netting and poor facilities have also been noted and passed on.
We’d once again like to put on record our thanks to our fantastic team of travelling stewards, who did their best in very difficult circumstances to help our fans. Some of the video footage clearly shows our stewards putting themselves between the batons and our fans. We cannot express our admiration and thanks enough.
We are very clear that action needs to be taken quickly and effectively to hold those responsible to account, and to ensure that nothing like this happens again. Enough is enough.
3. MANCHESTER UNITED AT WEMBLEY – 13 JANUARY 2019
On 12 December, the Club made its latest announcement on delays to moving in to our new stadium. Once again the announcement tells us of delays but gives no indication of when we might be moving in. We appreciate the Club does not want to name a date and again have to announce a delay. But fans who have paid premium prices for what is now at least half a season at a completely different stadium to the one they bought tickets for are understandably unhappy at the constant drip of information and we have again urged the Club to think again about the balance between project management and customer care.
The Club’s statement also quoted Daniel Levy as saying: “We are acutely conscious that we are asking fans to go to Wembley for far longer than any of us wanted to”. Acutely conscious he may be, but not apparently enough to agree to our request to price the game at Category B as a gesture of goodwill. The Club has also still not addressed the refund metric, the refund process or the fact that Season Ticket holders are being asked to pay match-day pricing for games at a stadium they did not buy tickets for.
We have repeatedly made these points to them and suggested constructive solutions.
The discontent this is causing was demonstrated very clearly when fans voted with their feet for the Southampton game. Only 33,000 turned up for a midweek game in December that the Club had priced as a Category B, despite strongly being pressed to price at C. The pricing, as the Evening Standard observed, was a mistake, costing the Club both money and goodwill. Unfortunately the pricing decision for the Manchester United game does not indicate that the lesson has been learned.
We will continue to press the point. Especially as we continue to receive a high volume of feedback critical of the pricing decisions and indicating that more fans are starting to pick and choose what games they attend.
A football club alienates its core support and breaks habits at its peril.
As we went to press, the Club announced tickets for both legs of our Carabao Cup semi-final against Chelsea would be priced at £25 for adults and £12 for concessions – a continuation of the accessible Cup game pricing policy that we very much welcome.
4. EVENTS CAP AT WEMBLEY STADIUM
As we went to press, we were still waiting for news following the planning application submitted to Brent Council to lift the capacity cap at Wembley Stadium. We clarified exactly what was being applied for and why in item 2 of our November newsletter. We retain the view that this application is a sensible contingency.
The Manchester United game, announced above, is a full-capacity event, and is included in the original quota of full-capacity games.
Level 5, the top level, of Wembley was closed for new ticket sales for the Wolves and Bournemouth games. We understand the rationale of doing this, both from a stadium staffing and a stadium atmosphere point of view. And we think the Club has got it right by offering to relocate those existing top tier ticket holders who want to move seats in as near an equivalent position as possible at no extra cost.
However, closing the top tier means the lowest Wembley price point of £20 is not available, leaving £32 as the cheapest seat available. While that does not sound bad for one ticket for one game, the extra £12 a ticket mounts up over games, especially for families or groups. We have raised this with the Club and been met with silence.
We’ve also received reports of insufficient catering provision on Level 5 at the Burnley game for those who retained their seats there. We’ve asked that this is addressed by Wembley’s catering company Delaware North. If Delaware gives it the same priority it has given delivering the map of catering outlets it promised over a year ago, don’t expect a resolution that soon.
5. SCHEDULING OF THE FA CUP THIRD ROUND v TRANMERE ROVERS – 4 JANUARY 2019
With the New Year break fast approaching, we weren’t surprised when the broadcasters delivered their annual Christmas gift to Spurs fans. Our third round FA Cup tie away at Tranmere Rovers has been scheduled by BT Sport for a 7.45pm kick-off on the first working Friday of the year, 4 January. There is no public transport back. And this comes three days after our away game in Cardiff on New Year’s Day.
To round it off, BT Sport then selected the second round replay between Southport and Tranmere for live coverage, pushing the date of the tie back a week and making it even more difficult for the Club to arrange subsidised transport.
Given that BT Sport has proved the most unwilling of all the broadcasters to engage with supporter groups over kick-off times, the utter disregard of and contempt for fans comes as no surprise.
We made our feelings clear as soon as the decision was known. We’ve asked the FA to clarify why this tie was selected for this slot. And we’ve asked the two fan reps on the FA Council to raise the issue. We’ve also told THFC that we expect clubs to be stronger in objecting to kick-off times that show little consideration for fans. Ideally, caveats should be built into the TV contracts that allow Clubs to block selections such as this. At the moment it seems that the clubs and the FA are content simply to take the money without protecting their fans or the product.
We do, however, thank the Club for arranging subsidised coach travel to the game at £10 a head, especially in the short time left available to it.
6. BUSINESS COMMUNITY LIAISON GROUP MEETING – 11 December 2018
No THST Board Member was able to make December’s Business and Community Liaison Group meeting as it clashed with our away Champions League game in Barcelona.
During this meeting MACE provided an update on the stadium build. The stadium façade and veil are nearing completion with testing to the integrated lighting system in the final stages.
Christmas site working hours are yet to be confirmed but are likely to see work on site paused for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. BCLG members will be given prior notice of all Test Event dates.
During this meeting those present were updated on the various discussions the Club is having with regards to public toilets. TfL is still considering the request for a toilet to be incorporated within White Hart Lane Station. The issue of the former public toilets next door to the No.8 pub was also raised. It was confirmed the Club is prepared to explore the principle of repairing the toilets and bringing them back into use in lieu of some of the public toilets provided around the stadium scheme. However, it is likely that anti-social behaviour issues that originally led to their closure may well still apply.
The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation has recently become part of a new Well-Being project, led by LB Haringey’s Children and Adults Mental Health Services (CAMHS). The project team will be based in Tottenham’s secondary schools with a view to supporting children transitioning from their local primary into secondary school. The project - funded by NHS England - is one of 20 trailblazers across the country and likely to start in the New Year.
The next meeting is to be held on Tuesday 22 January 2019.
7. WEMBLEY RESTRICTED BAG POLICY: AN UPDATE
We continue to monitor the operation of Wembley’s restricted bag policy, with an eye on how any such policy may operate at our new stadium. We continue to receive a high volume of traffic about these policies. Once again, we’d like to emphasise that our approach is to recognise the very real security concerns, but also to minimise genuine practical difficulties for supporters where possible and to point out those genuine difficulties if they appear not to have been considered. To use a simple analogy, we recognise the need for people to take their shoes off at airport security, but we’d have an issue with being told to leave shoes at home before we boarded.
The approach has already resulted in Spurs agreeing to change the minimum size of bag allowed into the new stadium from A5 to A4. Early indications are that habits are changing and that fewer bags are being brought to Wembley. This is a good thing. We continue to make the case that, for a significant minority of fans, and not just those with medical issues, it is not possible to change the habit of bringing a bag – for example those who are required to keep work laptops and cabling with them at all times – to games. So we continue to seek a solution that does not penalise them financially or cause significant inconvenience. We also recognise concerns about carrying personal and valuable possessions in clear bags.

- Premier League Enterprise Challenge – 7 December 2018
Whilst the 14 to 15-year-old school students were treated to a Q & A with Ledley King, the panel of judges spent an intense period of deliberation in an effort to separate four impressive presentations. The standard of the school inputs gets higher year by year and this year the judges found it hard to choose a winner.
Eventually, it was decided that the team from St Mary’s, Cheshunt, should go forward to the regional final.
The other three competing schools were Enfield Grammar, Gladesmore Community School, Tottenham and St Andrews the Apostle, Barnet.
The four judges were Anne-Marie Dargan and Sarah Williams from the Club, Chris Paouros of the Proud Lilywhites, and Kevin Fitzgerald, Trust Board member.
